Obscure Sports Note

Started with an obscure Simpsons reference:

For those of my readers who recognize that this is an image from the Simpsons, but are not sure from which episode, let me enlighten: Bart has obtained a fake driver's license and he, Milhouse, and Nelson have picked up Martin and used his money to rent a car for road trip to Knoxville. This picture of a fellow traveler in the episode who is yelling at his kids to settle down, Nelson proceeds to smack him, and, thinking it was his own kid, he reverses the car, saying, "That's it! Back to Winnipeg".

That's the image I got in my head when I heard the news that the Atlanta Thrashers, the professional hockey team in Atlanta, were purchased by a group of Canadian investors and were planning on moving the team to Winnipeg.

Winnipeg, the capital and largest city in the province of Manitoba, was the former home of he NHL Jets, who left in 1996 for Phoenix, and are now the Coyotes.

This marks a strange low for Atlanta: they've become the first city in the modern era to lose two NHL teams. The Atlanta Flames started play in 1972, but left for Calgary in 1980. The Thrashers started play in 1999, and it remains to be seen if they'll play next season in Atlanta or Winnipeg.
